For a wine to be labeled with an AVA, at least 85% must come from grapes in that AVA.

Help Build a Wine Region in Florida

Picture
Some things in life are just better together, like porches 'n swings, beaches 'n umbrellas, walking hand ‘n hand, and wine

'n vineyard tours. Organized with the objective of discovering the vine, ecotourism itineraries are listed entirely with

destinations specifically with just wine in mind. Wine lovers have this nose for travel and are drawn to explore

agglomerations of wineries and appellations of vineyard-lined regions around the globe. It is all about the scintillating

talk of, the alchemy-ish making of, the uncorked new discoveries of, the labyrinth aroma of, the flavor of ‘n most

importantly, the felicitous experience of wine in its entirety. And of course, the souvenirs are the wine (and its

paraphernalia thereof.)

The first known wine produced in the United States

was Scuppernong in Florida around 1562

Florida's wine industry has had an 11 billion-dollar impact on the economy (ranked 4th highest in the nation,) yet the world… not even a great deal of Florida’s locals knows it exists.

California is known as the “Wine Capital” of the United States.

Picture
Napa Valley is one of the world’s most esteemed wine-growing regions.
Wine is the main attraction in Napa Valley, CA. With roughly 46,000 acres under vine, the valley attracts nearly 4

million visitors a year.

•97% who visited couldn’t resist becoming a patron of its viniculture ‘n stopped by at least 1 winery to see what’s behind

closed doors.

•73% were enticed to step through at least 1 cellar door for a taste teaser.

•35.5% grew weak in the knees after their wine crawl ‘n stayed as an overnight guest.

Wineries generated $85.6 million in tax relief to residents, and its tourism industry generated $2.3 billion in total visitor

spending inside Napa County. Almost 70 percent is generated from overnight guests, who spend an average of $446 in

Napa County per guest, per day.

The creation, distribution, and consumption of Florida wine increasingly serve as an economic engine for development and a catalyst for generating tourism, jobs, and taxes for local communities, especially rural areas.

Bordeaux is known as the “Wine Capital” of the World.

Picture
Bordeaux is the largest fine-wine region in the world and is the 2nd most visited city within the borders of France. Only

Paris, “The Heart of France,” receives more visitors each year. Bordeaux wine spans nearly 2,000 years to Roman times

creating some of the world’s most highly prized (and priced) long-lived bottles of wine. With the combined acreage of

6,000 vineyards, the region has 250,000 acres under vine. Each run-of-the-mill vineyard has an average of just under 50

acres.

Each American Viticultural Area has a distinct “persona” that divides it from the other AVAs.

Florida’s subtropical region is conducive to growing quality fruity and muscadine wines.

Florida's impressive second-highest in the nation consumption rate underscores the potential for a thriving wine region in Florida, creating a significant economic and cultural impact.

We’d like to create a wine region that’s distinctive to Florida’s subtropical persona.

Mission Statement

•Establish a (deed-restricted) wine region.

• Organize and host Food and Wine Festivals to raise funds.

• Identify and acquire suitable land for vineyards and supporting infrastructure. Prepare the land by improving soil conditions and installing necessary systems (irrigation, trellising, etc.).

•Purchase and divide at least 700- 800 acres into 5 to 50-acre lots. Sell and rent the majority of properties to winemakers only. Select properties will be designated for a gastronista's shopping village, a DIY village of the arts, fairgrounds, parking, public bathrooms, and entertainment vendors.

•Start by bringing together at least 6 deep-rooted Florida wineries tucked into the slopes of a folded hillside. Amongst rolling roads fringed with steep slopes lined with muscadine, strawberry, blueberry, orange, lime… crops.

•Construct 6 (or more) commercial-scaled state-of-the-art wineries, with facilities for wine tasting, dining, production, storage, restrooms and an option for kitchen facilities. Then, sign over wineries and land to well-known Florida wine growers.

• Help growers obtain Florida Department of ABT licensures. Collaborate with the Florida Department of Agriculture to create a Farm Bill, allowing growers within the region to utilize communal crops, thereby reducing the minimum acreage requirements for smaller wineries to just one acre lot within the region.

• Register with the Florida Department of Health and construct On-Farm Labor Housing on four acres. Will include a community garden, community pool, playground and laundromat.

•Help establish an AVA (wine appellation) in the state of Florida. We want to collaborate with the National Grape Research Alliance, the University of Florida, the FAMU Center for Viticulture, and the USDA Agricultural Research Service to build a collaborative Extension/ Research Office within the wine region.

•Collaborate with the local Florida Department of Commerce to build a state-certified Florida Welcome Center within the region.

•Work together with the Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Wilton Simpson to create a Community State Fair Ground to hold state fairs and for individual wineries in the region to use for events.

•Create a public bike trail that goes around the region's perimeter.

•Construct a Gastronista's Shopping Village with an eclectic of historical European and Gregorian architectural elements. (DESIRED SHOPS: spice, tea, coffee, bakery, meat, cheese, honey, sweet shop, olive oil, ice cream, wine making, culinary class)

•Construct a DIY Art Village inspired by Cycladic architectural features.

• Construct a Community Center for Property Owners Association (POA meetings/ functions and a conjoining Wine Tasting Room that allows visitors to taste all the most sold and award-winning wines from each winery from the region.

Revenue from retail store rentals will be allocated towards building affordable homes, while revolving funds will go towards the (POA) will cover the upkeep of roads, trails, parking lots, fairgrounds, restrooms, entrance landscaping, expenses for tasting room bartenders and the management of the comunity center, retail villages, and fairgrounds.)

•Promote and create a wine trail passport for all current wineries in Florida. Launch marketing campaigns targeting wine enthusiasts and tourists.

Florida is known for being unapologetically Floridian. So, it is no surprise Florida is noted for making more non-grape wines than other state.

"I always loved judging at the Florida State Fair International Wine Competition because of the wines that I wouldn’t taste anywhere else: Blueberry, Carambola (star fruit), Grapefruit, Jalapeno, Key Line, Kiwi, Mango, and of course Orange."

~Tera Good, Vice President of The National Association of American Wineries
